The Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization (OTTC) at Nova Southeastern University plays a crucial role in assisting scientific researchers and other members of the NSU community in commercializing their inventions to generate positive social impact. As an integral part of NSU’s Division of Research and Economic Development (DoR), the OTTC operates alongside the Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Clinical Research, and the Grant Writing Laboratory to support the university’s research infrastructure.

What is Technology Transfer?

For an academic organization such as NSU, technology transfer is defined as the process of disseminating innovation for public benefit and revenue generation. The OTTC is dedicated to guiding NSU inventors through the challenges associated with technology transfer. With the university’s increasing focus on innovation and research, technology transfer has become a key component of NSU’s efforts to establish itself as a premier research institution.

The Importance of Technology Transfer

Technology transfer has significantly contributed to the growth of universities across the nation and has had a profound impact on the economy since the enactment of the Bayh-Dole Act (1980). This act allows universities to retain intellectual property rights from research funded by the federal government, rather than defaulting ownership to the government. Surveys conducted by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) indicate that technology transfer from academic institutions generated 4.3 million jobs and contributed 1.3 trillion dollars to the U.S. economy between 1996 and 2015.

Where Innovation Meets Expertise

We strive to be a fully integrated Technology Transfer Office structured to manage university intellectual property, fulfill the university’s federal obligations regarding transferring university generated technologies to the public, and interact with industry to commercialize university intellectual property. The primary mission of NSU’s OTTC is to translate scientific research from academic laboratories into real-world applications. By commercializing the university’s innovations, the OTTC seeks to maximize social impact and strengthen the economy. There are numerous pathways to commercialization, and the OTTC provides guidance to inventors to navigate the complex process of technology marketing in ways that benefit the inventor, the investor, and the university alike.

The OTTC provides comprehensive support in various aspects of technology transfer, including:

  • Intellectual Property (IP) Protection & Management – Ensuring university research is legally protected and effectively managed.
  • Federal Compliance – Assisting with adherence to federal regulations related to research commercialization.
  • Forms & Contracts Assistance – Providing support in documentation required for technology transfer activities.
  • Invention Evaluation & Marketing – Assessing the commercial viability of university research and facilitating marketing efforts.
  • Commercialization of Innovations – Helping inventors transition their research into viable market products.
  • Revenue Management – Overseeing revenue distribution from commercialization activities.
  • University Spinoff Formation – Supporting the creation of startups based on NSU innovations.
  • Collaboration with Corporate Partners – Fostering partnerships with industry leaders to enhance commercialization opportunities.
  • Education & Economic Value Creation – Promoting educational initiatives and driving economic growth through technology transfer.

Through these activities, NSU’s OTTC aims to bridge the gap between research and industry, ensuring that university-driven innovations contribute meaningfully to society while creating economic opportunities for inventors and stakeholders.
